The National Order of Merit is an honorary distinction instituted by President Charles de Gaulle in 1963. It is meant to recognize the merits of a person, French or foreigner, who distinguished his or her private or professional life in service of France, in service of a noble cause in his or her country, or who has played an important role in the development of relations between his or her country and France. The President of the Republic is the Grand Master of the Order. The Order has a common Chancellor and Chancery with the National Order of the Legion of Honor.
