The Lycée International Franco-Américain, the École Internationale de la Peninsule, the Lycée Français La Pérouse and the École Bilingue de Berkeley are organizing a soccer tournament for francophone schools from around the world. The competition will feature 14 teams from 5 countries: Kenya, Morocco, Mexico, Canada and the United States. The opening ceremony took place Monday, June 20th in the gymnasium of the Lycée International Franco-Américain. Flags raised high, the 5th and 6th grade students paraded and chanted in front of hundreds of spectators. The ceremony, opened by Raymond Hinz and Edward Mayoral, elementary school principal and assistant principal at the Lycée Franco-Americain, allowed Marc Cauet, guidance counselor for the Agency for French Teaching Abroad and Romain Serman, Consul General of France in San Francisco, to speak to the athletes and the crowd.

Three days of friendly competition began Tuesday in Crocker Amazon Park, San Francisco and will continue Wednesday at Stanford University. Thursday June 23rd, all the players, united by love of the French language and of soccer will cross the Golden Gate Bridge, then the finalists will play at the Red Hill Community Park in Marin.

The matches feature students from grades 5 and 6 (CM2 and 6ème) who all study French in different countries: Mexico, Canada, the Middle East, Central Africa, Northern Africa and the United States. This initiative is the first of its kind for the French school network (anglo-saxon schools already have several). The project, supported particularly by the Consulate General of France in San Francisco, and the Agency for French Teaching Abroad (Agence pour l’Enseignement du Francais à l’Étranger), aims to celebrate the French-speaking world by bringing together youth from all corners of the globe who share a common interest for the French language. Spread out amongst three sites in the North and South Bay Area, the Tournament of the Americas features co-ed teams of 7 against 7.

The Tournament of the Americas hopes to become a tradition. This first edition will take place in California, but other cities in North America, such as New York, Washington or Montreal, could apply. Its goal is to become an example for academic competitions for the international network of French schools (more than 450 throughout the world).

Why soccer?

Given the international span of our network, soccer is the obvious choice being the most popular mixed sport played in the world. It is also an excellent medium of exchange, discovery, and respect between students from different cultures and origins.
