Legion of honor: Francis Patrick Byrne

On January 20th, at the French consulate in San Francisco (88 Kearny), the Consul of France in San Francisco, Pauline Carmona, presented the medal of the Legion of Honor to Francis Patrick Byrne, an American World War II veteran.

“Today, we celebrated a hero whose courage, faith and dedication contributed, more than 70 years ago, to defend and preserve the independence of France and to save our common values: Freedom, tolerance, democracy”, said Pauline Carmona.

Francis Patrick Byrne was born on February 29th, 1924, in Dublin, Ireland.
He was 17 years old when he joined the US Navy.

As a radar technician aboard the USS Augusta, he was part of the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, taking a decisive part to the liberation of France, and Europe, from the Nazis.

Wounded during the operations, he was transferred to United States Naval Hospital, at Philadelphia.

For his actions, he was awarded, among others, the Good Conduct medal and four Bronze stars.
