MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR JEAN-LOUIS MILESI. My name is Jean-Louis Milesi, I am a screenwriter and director. The latest film that I penned, The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Robert Guediguian, was shown at this year's edition of the San Francisco International Film Festival. The film was selected at the Cannes Film Festival and also won best screenplay at this year's Prix Des Lumières (equivalent to The Golden Globe Awards). I wrote all together 10 screenplays for Robert Guediguian of which “Marius and Jeannette” and “Marie-Jo and her two lovers”. Less than 2 years ago, I arrived to the Bay Area with my family, just to see this region nothing else. Initially we were supposed to spend 1 year. I liked what I saw and here we are 22 months later we're still here and thinking of staying even longer. I became extremely inspired cinematically by the Bay Area. Actually, I am in the midst of preparing to shoot a film this summer, called Don't Give Up The Ghost. It is the story of a family for a family audience. A comedy set in the backdrop of summer in the Bay Area. I wanted to break away from the traditional ways of raising money and decided to do a kickstarter campaign. We've launched this campaign 2 weeks ago and have raised 30% of our goal. If we do not raise the entire amount by our deadline date we do not get any money, it's all or nothing and your account will not be debited. I like this way of raising funds, it is interactive, the audience is completely involved from the beginning and they get great incentives for their contributions. For everyone who would like to support us, our campaign ends on the 5th of June. Every penny counts. You can become a backer of the project for as little as $10. May 8, 2012: 67 years later, three veterans receive the Legion of Honor

67 years ago, the Allies celebrated victory over Nazi Germany. On May 8, 2012, Romain Serman, Consul General of France in San Francisco, honored three heroes of World War II, George Cooper, Angel Garcia and Louis Vecchi, whose courage, selflessness and dedication helped to defend and preserve the independence of France and our common values: freedom, tolerance and democracy.

These three young men had come to France to save people they did not even know. But they can be sure that these people they did not know have not forgotten. Their children and grandchildren have not forgotten. France has not forgotten. That's why today, President Nicolas Sarkozy has decided to give them the highest recognition of the French Republic: the Legion of Honor.

George Cooper

Mr. Cooper joined the U.S. Air Force in April 1941. He first attended flight school in Selma, Alabama. He obtained his pilot degree in September 1943. It is then deployed in the north of England. It incorporates the "9th U. S. Army Air Force" posted on aircraft "P47-Thunderbolt", he first had a protection mission, accompanying the bombers during their long missions over enemy territory. During and after the landing of June 6, the protection of allied troops and attacks of German troops became the priority of the fighter squadron. 15 P-47 aircrafts were lost in combat. In late July the squadron was assigned to Tour-en-Bessin (14) near Bayeux. The mission of Mr. Cooper and other pilots is to destroy railroads, trains, factories, warehouses and other military targets useful to the enemy, to facilitate the advance of Allied troops across France. In late August, the squadron was transferred near Paris and then in Belgium. It totals at the end of the war, 81 combat missions. After the war, Mr. Cooper performed a successful career as a test pilot for NASA.

Angel Garcia

Mr. Angel Garcia joined the U.S. Army in October 1942. He was assigned to the 120th Infantry Regiment - 30th Infantry Division. The Division landed at Omaha Beach on June 11, 1944. His first mission is to secure the defense line of the canal Vire - Taute, around Saint-Fromond (50). The offensive of the 30th DI seriously begins on July 3. On the 7th, it gets past the Vire and reach St. Jean de Daye (50). In Mid-July, despite the difficulties, the DI takes control of the heights, northwest of Saint-Lô (50), which indirectly helped the 29th ID to enter the city. For Operation Cobra, the 30th DI receives the primary mission to pierce the German front, before the charge of the armored divisions. On the 24th, the unit was bombed by mistake by the U.S. Air Force, causing the deaths of 24 men. The worst is still ahead of them -the next day, at the beginning of the offensive, the same error costs more than 60 people and almost as many missing! The offensive, however, is maintained, and the 30th DI manages to breach the German lines - it captures Hébécrevon (50) the same day, the day after Saint-Gilles - allowing the rush of piercing definitely the German lines in this sector. Then progressing towards the south, it releases Troisgot (50) on July 31st. After a few days of rest, the 30th DI is found around Mortain. As of August 7, she was attacked by German elite units who launched the operation Lüttich. The 120th RI is completely crushed, surrounded for several days on the coast 314, before being released Aug. 12. The inhabitants of the town of Mortain still remember the heroic sacrifice of the regiment. This was the last great battle of the 30th ID in Normandy. Mid-August, it is directed to the east by Mortagne (61), Dreux and Evreux. After crossing the Seine, the 30th ID takes the north to Belgium and Holland. Sergeant Garcia was wounded in Germany.

Louis Vecchi

Louis M. Vecchi joins the U.S. Army in August 1942. It is integrated with the "506th Parachute Infantry Regiment," unit incorporated in the famous "101st Airborne Division." After training at Fort Bragg (North Carolina), the Division is sent to England and arrived in Liverpool on 15 September 1943. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, the regiment was parachuted behind German lines. Like many units, the 506th was widely scattered overnight. The best known action of the unit was the assault of the manor of Brécourt. The landing on Utah Beach is facilitated by the courageous action of the "506th Regiment". Then comes the Battle of Carentan (50) and return to England after 33 days of fighting. Approximately 2,000 men of the regiment were parachuted into France. 231 were killed, 183 missing or prisoners of war, 569 wounded. Sergeant Vecchi and his unit will be mobilized in September 1944 for Operation "Market Garden" in Holland, the largest airborne assault of all time, and then participate, after a short rest in France, to the Battle of the Ardennes.

Il y a 67 ans, les alliés célébraient leur victoire sur l'Allemagne nazie. En ce 8 mai 2012, Romain Serman, Consul général de France à San Francisco, a honoré trois héros de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, George Cooper, Angel Garcia et Louis Vecchi, dont le courage, l'abnégation et le dévouement ont contribué à défendre et préserver l'indépendance de la France et nos valeurs communes : la liberté, la tolérance et la démocratie.

Ces trois jeunes hommes étaient venus en France pour sauver un peuple qu'ils ne connaissaient même pas. Mais ils peuvent être sûrs que ces gens qu'ils ne connaissaient pas n'ont pas oublié. Leurs enfants et leurs petits-enfants n'ont pas oublié. La France ne les a pas oubliés. Et c'est pourquoi aujourd'hui le Président Nicolas Sarkozy a décidé de leur remettre la plus haute reconnaissance de la République française : la Légion d'Honneur.

George Cooper

M. George Cooper intègre l'armée de l'air américaine en avril 1941. C'est d'abord l'école de pilotage à Selma, Alabama. Il obtient son brevet de pilote de chasse en septembre 1943. Il est alors déployé dans le nord de l'Angleterre. Il intègre la « 9th U.S. Army Air Force ». Cooper et des autres pilotes est de détruire voies ferrées, trains, usines, entrepôts et autres objectifs militaires utiles à l'ennemi, afin de faciliter l'avancée des troupes alliées à travers la France. Fin août, l'escadron est transféré près de Paris et ensuite en Belgique. Il totalise, à la fin de la guerre, 81 missions de combat. Après la guerre, M. Cooper accomplit une brillante carrière de pilote d'essais pour la NASA.

Angel Garcia

M. Angel Garcia intègre l'armée américaine en octobre 1942. Il est affecté au 120th Infantry Regiment – 30th Infantry Division. La Division débarque à Omaha Beach le 11 juin 1944. Sa première mission est de sécuriser la ligne de défense du canal Vire – Taute, autour de Saint-Fromond (50). L'offensive de la 30e DI commence sérieusement à partir du 3 juillet. Le 7, elle parvient à passer la Vire et à atteindre Saint Jean de Daye (50). Mi-juillet, malgré les difficultés rencontrées, la 30e DI est maître des hauteurs au nord ouest de Saint-Lô (50), permettant indirectement à la 29e DI de se saisir de la ville. En vue de l'opération Cobra, la 30e DI reçoit la mission primordiale de percer le front allemand, avant la charge des divisions blindées. Le 24, elle est bombardée par erreur par l'U.S. Air Force, ce qui cause la mort de 24 hommes. Le pire est toutefois à venir- le lendemain, début de l'offensive, la même erreur coûte plus de 60 morts et presque autant de disparus ! L'offensive est pourtant maintenue, et la 30e DI parvient à enfoncer les lignes allemandes – elle capture Hébécrevon (50) le jour même, Saint-Gilles le lendemain – permettant à la ruée blindée de percer définitivement les lignes allemandes dans ce secteur. Progressant ensuite toujours plus au sud, elle libère Troisgot (50) le 31 juillet. Après quelques jours de repos, la 30e DI se retrouve aux alentours de Mortain. A partir du 7 août, elle est assaillie par les unités d'élites allemandes lancées dans l'opération Lüttich. Le 120e RI est complètement écrasé, encerclé pendant plusieurs jours sur la côte 314, avant d'être dégagé le 12 août. Les habitants de la ville de Mortain se rappellent encore l'héroïque sacrifice du Régiment. Ce devait être le dernier grand combat de la 30e DI en Normandie. Mi-août, elle est dirigée vers l'est par Mortagne (61), Dreux, et Evreux. Une fois la traversée de la Seine effectuée, la 30e DI prend la direction du nord vers la Belgique et la Hollande. Le sergent Garcia sera blessé en Allemagne.

Louis Vecchi

M. Louis Vecchi intègre l'armée américaine en août 1942. Il est intégré au « 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment », unité incorporée à la fameuse « 101st Airborne Division ». Après entrainement à Fort Bragg (Caroline du Nord), la Division est acheminée vers l'Angleterre et arrive à Liverpool le 15 septembre 1943. Aux premières heures du 6 juin 1944, le régiment est parachuté derrière les lignes allemandes. Comme beaucoup d'unités, le 506e fut largement éparpillé durant la nuit. L'action la plus connue de l'unité est l'assaut du manoir de Brécourt. Le débarquement sur la plage d'Utah Beach est facilité par l'action courageuse du “506th Regiment”. Puis ce sera la bataille de Carentan (50) et le retour sur l'Angleterre après 33 jours de combat. Environ 2 000 hommes du régiment furent parachutés en France. 231 furent tués, 183 disparus ou prisonniers de guerre, 569 blessés. Le Sergent Vecchi et son unité seront mobilisés en septembre 1944 pour l'opération « Garden Market » en Hollande, le plus grand assaut aéroporté de tous les temps, et ensuite participeront, après un court repos en France, à la bataille des Ardennes.
